Party Signs, Decorations and Special Event Banners

My name is Mike, and ever since I was small, I have loved making celebratory signs. I was always the kid with the 'welcome home' or 'happy birthday' sign at my house, and as soon as my parents bought our first computer, I started making signs using software programming. I followed that path later in life and have helped many friends design their signs. I love special occasion signs in particular. If you own a business, are planning a party, or have a special event coming up, please explore this space. It has everything you ever wanted to know about signs and hopefully more!

5 Reasons to Pick PVC Foam Over Wood for an Outdoor Sign

by Charlotte Harvey

If you need an outside sign for your business, you'll probably end up having to choose between either PVC foam or wood. Wood might be the traditional option, but it's far from the best. Here are just four reasons why PVC foam is a better option.

1. Durability

Undeniably the most important reason to use a PVC foam sign instead of a wooden sign for outside purposes is that PVC foam will hold up a lot better to the elements. Wood can swell and rot when it meets moisture, and you'll need to reapply sealant and paint regularly to keep it looking its best. You won't experience such difficulties with PVC foam. It is completely waterproof, won't be damaged by extreme heat or cold, and you won't need to apply any treatment.

2. Economical

As with any business purchase, you'll want to ensure that your costs are kept as low as possible without sacrificing quality, and going with PVC instead of wood will help you cover both bases. The material is very inexpensive to manufacturer and doesn't require the same expert craftspeople that a wooden sign will often demand, so you can expect to pay far less when you opt for a PVC foam sign instead of using wood.

3. Quick Turnaround

PVC foam sheets can be manufactured very quickly, and your sign can be printed right onto the sheets. This means that you'll enjoy a very quick turnaround time on your order. That's great for the initial purchase, but it's also highly advantageous if you ever need a new sign in the same style. Wood, in contrast, takes quite a long time to work, especially with custom touches added, so you're unlikely to have your sign as quickly.

4. Lightweight

Regardless of the intended purpose, one of the most popular things about PVC foam is that it is extremely light. If you're considering an outdoor sign, weight is obviously going to be a prime concern. Anything too heavy will need to be more firmly anchored and will be a lot harder to move around. Most varieties of hardwood used for signs are both dense and heavy, making them a poor choice.

5. Eco-Friendly

As a natural material, you might assume that wood is a more eco-friendly option to use for your signage compared to PVC foam boards. However, this is not actually the case. PVC foam products can be melted down and then recycled into other products. A printed wood sign will be very hard to recycle since it will have been treated with chemicals; usually, wood signs will go to landfill.
